Shanghai Dragons pick up first win of Countdown Cup qualifiers

The Countdown Cup qualifiers continued in the Eastern Region of the Overwatch League on Saturday with the Philadelphia Fusion, Shanghai Dragons and Chengdu Hunters picking up wins.

The Dragons (11-4, 19 points) picked up their first win of the Countdown Cup with a 3-2 series win against the East’s second-ranked team, the Seoul Dynasty (11-4, 11 points). Both teams came into this series needing a win; Shanghai looked to snap a two-game losing skid while Seoul looked to build on their Eastern Region-leading regular-season record.

The Dynasty started with a 2-0 win on Nepal, but the Dragons responded with a 3-2 win on Route 66. Seoul played a lot of Orisa compositions throughout the series, including a dominant 2-0 win on Temple of Anubis in Game 3. Shanghai’s versatility and adaptability came in clutch late in the series, though, as the Dragons took Blizzard World 2-1. With the series on the line, the Dragons came up big, taking Busan 2-0 to secure the series win.

In other Saturday action, the Philadelphia Fusion (10-5, 10 points) took down the New York Excelsior (7-8, 7 points) in a 3-1 series. Both teams looked sloppy at times, but Philadelphia’s talented roster pulled through. The Fusion started with a 2-1 win on Lijiang Tower, then dominated Route 66 for a 3-0 full-hold. The Excelsior showed some fight after that with a 2-1 win on Hanamura, but Philadelphia would close out the series with a 3-2 win on Numbani.

Finally, the Chengdu Hunters (8-5, 10 points) took a 3-1 series win against the Guangzhou Charge (3-10, 3 points). The Charge needed a win to start climbing into potential playoff contention, but the Hunters were too much for Guangzhou to overcome. Chengdu picked up their first win of the Countdown Cup in a solid showing across the board, led by DPS Yi “JinMu” Hu’s Pharah, who recorded 107 direct rocket hits and 52 eliminations.

The Hunters kicked the series off with a 2-0 win on Oasis, but then struggled heavily on Route 66, leading to a 1-0 win for the Charge as Chengdu’s offense simply failed to get going. After a 1-1 draw on Temple of Anubis, the Hunters regained control of the series with a 2-1 win on Blizzard World before taking a 2-0 win on Nepal to close out the series.
