LCS Championship top eight set as TSM earns top seed

The League Championship Series’ summer season has come to a close, and TSM emerged in the top slot despite losing Sunday with 100 Thieves a game behind and Evil Geniuses and Cloud9 rounding out the top four.

With the LCS Championship brackets set to begin play Aug. 7-29, FlyQuest and Counter Logic Gaming finished ninth and tenth, respectively, leaving those two squads out of the bracket.

TSM (30-15) was able to hold onto its No. 1 spot despite a 26-minute loss to Dignitas (who played on red), because 100 Thieves (29-16) were also tripped up, dropping their match in nearly 37 minutes to Evil Geniuses (who played on blue).

Dignitas (23-22) sprang the upset thanks in part to the efforts of David “Yusui” Bloomquist of the U.S., who put up a kills-deaths-assists ratio of 10-6-6. “Spica” Mingyi Lu paced TSM with a K-D-A ratio of 8-5-5.

Evil Geniuses (28-17) were powered to victory by Kyle “Danny” Sakamaki, who notched a K-D-A ratio of 5-1-2.

Cloud9, playing on blue, defeated Team Liquid (27-18) in 33 minutes to wrap up fourth place in the standings, forcing TL to settle for fifth. Jesper “Zven” Svenningsen led the way for Cloud9 (28-17) with a 11-2-3 kills-deaths-assists ratio.

The bottom of the standings was no less dramatic, as Golden Guardians (14-31) playing on blue used a 39-minute victory over Immortals (20-25) to force a tie with FlyQuest (14-31), who lost playing on red in 37 minutes to Counter Logic Gaming (12-33). That string of results put Golden Guardians into the playoff field and knocked FlyQuest out.

With the top 10 North American League of Legends teams finished their triple round robin of best-of-one matches, the top eight clubs will now compete in the LCS Championship played throughout August. The final rounds will be played in Newark, N.J.

The top two teams will start in Round 2 of the Championship’s upper bracket. Third through sixth will start in Round 1 of the upper bracket, and seventh and eighth will start in Round 1 of the lower bracket.
