Team Vitality sweep Ninjas in Pyjamas to win IEM Winter title

Team Vitality earned a clean 3-0 sweep against Ninjas in Pyjamas on Sunday to win the title at the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Intel Extreme Masters Season XVI Winter event in Stockholm.

Vitality won the best-of-five grand final by scores of 16-10 on Inferno, 16-10 on Dust II and 16-13 on Nuke. They earned a $100,000 grand prize and 1,000 Pro Tour points, while NiP took home $42,000 and 750 points for second place.

Both teams reached the grand final by way of the quarterfinals, as neither side was able to clinch a first-round bye by winning their group during the group stage. Vitality defeated Gambit Esports 2-1 in the quarterfinals and 2-0 in the semis. NiP defeated GODSENT and G2 Esports in those rounds, each time eking out a 2-1 victory.

The grand final was a rematch of a Group A upper-bracket match that Vitality won 2-0. NiP were unable to exact revenge Sunday, failing to win a single map.

Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut again starred for the all-French Team Vitality. He posted 70 kills and a plus-28 kills-to-deaths differential, both high watermarks for the grand final. He received help from teammates Richard “shox” Papillon (66 kills, plus-24) and Dan “apEX” Madesclaire (59 kills, plus-13).

Fredrik “REZ” Sterner of Sweden had a team-high 54 kills for NiP, which did not have any player finish with a positive K-D differential.

Sixteen teams began the event on Dec. 2, competing for a share of a $250,000 prize pool. Opening-round matches were best-of-one, followed by best-of-three series for the rest of the group stage. Six teams comprised the playoff bracket, with the quarterfinals and semifinals best-of-three and the finals best-of-five.
