Movistar Riders sent Owen “smooya” Butterfield to their bench as part of a transition to an all-Spanish Counter-Strike: Global Offensive team roster, the organization announced Thursday.
Smooya signed with the team on Feb. 12 after stints with BIG, Chaos Esports Club and c0ntact Gaming. The team is adding Alvaro “SunPayus” Garcia, Raul “DeathZz” Jordan and David “dav1g” Granado.
Veterans Alejandro “mopoz” Fernandez-Quejo and Alejandro “alex” Masanet also are on the roster.
A Brit, smooya now is free to pursue a spot on another team. He turns 22 on Monday.
“With this new roster, we are looking forward to having a completely national project and taking it to the top, with the mission to be the reference for all Spanish CS:GO fans,” Movistar Riders said in a news release.
The new team will debut in ESEA Season 38: Premier Division — Europe. Play begins Tuesday.
In a Twitlonger post, smooya said he doesn’t intend to go away.
“And that leaves me with my never ending unpredictable future, for now I will continue to stream and fight for the FPL championship,” he said, continuing:
“Status is benched but I won’t be going anywhere, you’ll see me live everyday.”
