Rokkr stage epic comeback to win CDL Stage 5 Major

The Minnesota Rokkr pulled off a miraculous comeback, stunning the Toronto Ultra with an epic reverse sweep after trailing 4-0 in a stunning 5-4 triumph in the grand finals Sunday at the Call of Duty League’s Stage 5 Major.

After falling behind the best-of-nine final four games to none, the Rokkr took the final five maps in incredible fashion to win the event, takinghome the $200,000 prize pool in the process.

Making the final result even more remarkable was how one-sided the first four maps had been. The Ultra crushed the Rokkr 250-34 on Checkmate Hardpoint to open the match, then followed with easy wins on Moscow Search and Destroy (6-1), Raid Control (3-1) and Raid Hardpoint (250-194) to build a seemingly insurmountable 4-0 lead.

Minnesota got on the board with a 6-3 victory on Miami Search and Destroy, then took Garrison Control 3-1 and Standoff Search and Destroy 6-2 to pull within one map. The Rokkr tied the match 4-4 with a 250-165 decision on Apocalypse Hardpoint, and completed the rally with a 6-3 win on Raid Search and Destroy.

The final capped a roller-coaster day between the two teams, who initially met in the upper-bracket final, a 3-0 Rokkr sweep. Minnesota won maps in succession on Checkmate Hardpoint (250-225), Raid Search and Destroy (6-3) and Garrison Control (3-1) to drop Toronto to the lower bracket Saturday.

The Ultra rebounded with a 3-1 victory over OpTic Chicago in an elimination match. Toronto took the first map 250-245 on Garrison Hardpoint, then lost the second 6-4 on Moscow Search and Destroy. The Ultra then earned wins in successive maps to stay alive, conquering Raid Control 3-1 and Checkmate Hardpoint 250-148.

Chicago beat the Dallas Empire 3-1 in Sunday’s first lower-bracket match, starting with a 250-86 win on Moscow Hardpoint. The Empire tied it at 1-1 by taking Raid Search and Destroy 6-5, but OpTic Chicago earned wins on Checkmate Control (3-2) and Raid Hardpoint (250-203).
