Empire, FaZe reach CDL Championship winners-bracket final

The Dallas Empire rallied for a win and the Atlanta FaZe swept to a victory Friday to advance to the winners-bracket final at the Call of Duty League Championship at Galen Center in Los Angeles.

Dallas downed the Toronto Ultra 3-2, and Atlanta defeated the New York Subliners 3-0.

The FaZe and Empire will square off Saturday for a berth in the grand final on Sunday.

The Ultra stayed alive later Friday by beating OpTic Chicago 3-1 in a losers-bracket match. The Subliners were eliminated when they fell 3-1 to the Minnesota Rokkr in losers-bracket action.

Minnesota and Toronto will meet in the losers-bracket third round on Saturday.

The $2.5 million tournament features a $1.2 million prize for the winning team. All matches in the double-elimination event are best-of-five.

The top two teams from the Call of Duty League regular season, the FaZe and the Ultra, earned first-round byes and opened play Friday.

The teams that finished third through sixth in the regular season opened play Thursday in the winners bracket, while the seventh- and eighth-place squads began Thursday in the losers bracket.

On Friday, the Empire opened with a 250-183 victory on Raid Hardpoint before the Ultra captured Express Search and Destroy 6-4 and Checkmate Control 3-1. Dallas prevailed 250-118 on Moscow Hardpoint and 6-4 on Raid Search and Destroy to steal the match.

The FaZe topped the Subliners 250-149 on Raid Hardpoint, 6-3 on Miami Search and Destroy and 3-0 on Garrison Control.

In the losers bracket, the Ultra jumped on top of OpTic with a 250-176 victory on Checkmate Hardpoint and a 6-3 decision on Moscow Search and Destroy. Chicago extended the series with a 3-2 win on Raid Control before Toronto closed it out by taking Raid Hardpoint 250-230.

The Rokkr captured Garrison Hardpoint 250-122 before the Subliners drew level with a 6-4 triumph on Raid Search and Destroy. Minnesota advanced by taking Garrison Control 3-2 and Checkmate Hardpoint 250-218.
